Sam was 13 when he was referred to Miriam’s Promise; by then he already had lived in 15 foster homes. As the final hearing for his adoption approached, he kept asking to see “the green paper.” The staff eventually realized that he meant his birth certificate by adoption. To Sam, that paper meant belonging. It meant he would have the same name as the family with whom he lived. It meant forever.
