At Miriam's Promise, we know that caring for members of the adoption triad doesn't end once the adoption is finalized. Please read below for more information.

Child & Family Counseling
Miriam's Promise offers counseling for children and their families to address adoption related issues.  As children grow cognitively and mature emotionally, questions and issues about their adoption often surface.  Our counselors all hold advanced degrees and have years of experience in adoption related services.   They are well equipped to address the unique concerns of the adoptive triad.

Miriam's Promise also offers counseling designed specifically for families adopting a child over the age of 12 months.  Services may be initiated at any point in the adoption process; however it is recommended that an evaluation/assessment be made at the time of placement.   After the assessment the therapist will make a recommendation regarding the most appropriate intervention.  Depending on individual circumstances the therapist may recommend than the parents be seen alone, the parents and child be see together, or that the child be seen alone.  Therapists working with families adopting older children have had extensive training in the area of attachment and are prepared to help families rebuild attachment in traumatized children.

Counselors are available by appointment.  Please contact us at  (615) 292-3500.

Adoption 301 - Advanced Topics in Adoption
Trainings designed to prepare families for the unique challenges of raising children who are adopted at an older age.  Many of these children have experienced such trauma in their lives that they need special help to form attachments to their adoptive families and/or often need help to modify behaviors that are difficult to manage.  The trainings are provided in a supportive environment that affords the parents an opportunity to network with others who understand their struggles and needs.   Trainings are scheduled periodically throughout the year and are open to families who are considering adopting an older child or who have already adopted an older child.  For more information, please contact Allison Balthrop at allisonb@miriamspromise.org  or call 615-292-3500.
